For anyone arriving from the North (Milan, Turin, Alessandria) and passing over the Turchino Mountain Pass, there is a special moment when mist and fog are forgotten and one remains speechless, each time as if it were the first. The sea down below winks at us and promises magic moments. The blue we glimpse is that of the sea at Arenzano, the real doorway to the Ligurian Riviera.
Tiny seafaring centre of ancient tradition, Arenzano is very near to the city. In a few minutes it is possible to reach the Cristoforo Colombo International Airport of Genoa, the Genoa railway stations of Principe and Brignole or that of Savona; it takes only twenty minutes to reach the centre of Genoa with its International Fair, the Palazzo Ducale, the greatest Aquarium in Europe, the Carlo Felice Theatre and the Porto Antico area with the very recently built Congress Centre. At Arenzano the climate, stable throughout the year, is mitigated by the greenery of the pines and of the olivetrees, sheltered from the Northern currents thanks to the Ligurian Apennines. The coast offers both beaches and cliffs; it is ideal for canoeing, sailing or kayaking and, at the same time, for sportive and underwater fishing, thanks to the presence of its rugged coves. The marina, with its modern equipment and installations, offer shelter and every kind of service to pleasure-boats and sports craft. Thus its fame has grown as tourist resort, visited during the summer by those who love the sea, the beaches, the sand and, during the winter season, by those who like mild climate and coastal peace.
To the rear of this seafaring resort and its neighbouring villages rises Mount Beigua, a vast table-land of extraordinary environmental and naturalistic interest.
The Apennine landscape of hidden valleys is indeed characteristic, with the typical Mediterranean undergrowth alternating with steep gorges and ravines. The mountain slopes, therefore, are ideal practice-walls for rock-climbers; often the paths are practicable by mountain-bike and horse-riding, whilst numerous excursions can be made by car through villages, which always reserve some gastronomic, artistic, panoramic surprise. The commercial activities are concentrated in its historic centre and offer a numerous and diversified series of points of sale. There are “trattorie” and restaurants at Arenzano able to satisfy every whim and purse, night-clubs, bathing-establishments, amusement arcades, cinemas, a summer arena for concerts and shows of every kind, as well as a library is also available there.
The typical gastronomic specialities of the area are the first courses (troffie, trenette, lasagne-pasta dishes) garnished with “pesto” – a basil-based sauce characteristic of Genoese cooking -fried, lemon-soused or salt-cured anchovies, mixed-fish soup or prime-quality grilled fish, vegetable pies typical of the regional cooking. Restaurants able to offer international dishes are not lacking, as well as sandwich bars and pubs, haunts preferred by the youngsters. At Arenzano, to conclude, there are many sport facilities available: football grounds, a horse-riding centre, tennis courts, a various open-air swimming pools, bowling-greens and an im-portant golf links inside the famous Arenzano pinewood.
History and Art
A seafaring small town founded perhaps by the ancient Ligurians, in the Middle Ages it was part of the Genoa Republic. The X Century Tower, the main look-out post, witnesses the frequent and bloody battles against the Saracens coming from over the sea. Devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague has grown considerably over the present century. The Sanctuary is very near to the railway station, to the Aurelia coast-road, to the motorway toll-booth. In- side the Sanctuary are preserved important ceramic decorations from Albisola. The Arenzano parish church, which has an interesting baroque facade, is dedicated to Saints Nazario and Celso; paintings by Orazio De Ferrari and by other well-known artists are kept there.
A destination not to be overlooked is the XVI Century Negrotto Cambiaso park and villa, with its chapel dedicated to the Madonna, the majestic glass and wrought-iron greenhouse (with shoot and horns of plenty decorations), the water-plant pond in front of the Villa and the botanical garden, rich in species such as cypresses, yews, pines, camphors and Lebanon cedars.
As far as concerns the more recent history, there exist interesting archeological finds: various mills and a paper-mill.

Da Alda Merini a Arenzano
In un castello di favole
una voce errabonda
mi ricordava qualcuno
che ormai non ci sarà più.
Col sogno di primavera
un vestito di gala, un principe scarlatto
che portava il mio nome.
E intorno a questo enigma
danzavano i pavoni
che irradiavano il vanto
della grande poesia.
Alberi illustri enormi,
vestiti di montagne,
su cui cadeva il ...
